Tushar Kalia is an Indian choreographer & dancer best known for being the winner of Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 (2022). He is specialised in Mayurbhanj Chhau, Kalari and Contemporary dance forms.
He was born on 7th March 1986 in a Saraswat Brahmin Hindu family in Chandigarh, India. He has 2 siblings: Pritash Kalia and Saher Kalia.
Tushar did his schooling from D.A.V Pushpanjali Enclave in Pitampura, New Delhi and Ryan International School in Noida, Uttar Pradesh & later graduated from University of Delhi.
His brother, Pritash Kalia is married to Shilpi Kalia and the couple is blessed with 2 daughters.
His mother was a dance teacher at D.A.V Pushpanjali Enclave, Pitampura, New Delhi.
Tushar began his formal training in dance under Shri Santosh Nair (revered Kathakali dancer & the creative director of ‘Sadhya Unit of Performing Arts’) and he also learned Ariel technique dancing from canadian choreographer Brandy Leary. He has also collaborated and performed with international choreographers for a production called ‘Motherland’ in Birmingham, UK.
Tushar Kalia made his acting debut in the movie ABCD: Any Body Can Dance (2013) as one of the dancers in JDC (Jehangir Dance Company).
He came into limelight in 2013, when he was paired up with Ekta Kaul as her choreographer in the popular dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6’ and after Ekta’s eviction he was paired up with the wild card entrant Sana Saeed.
In 2014, he paired up with Shakti Mohan in ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7’ and they emerged as the 2nd runner up of the show.
Karan Johar, who was one of the judges of the Season 6 & 7 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa gave him his first movie ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ as a choreographer. Post this, he went to choreograph for the movies like Ok Jaanu (2017), Half Girlfriend (2017), Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017), Hate Story 4 (2018), Dhadak (2018), Namaste England (2018), Junglee (2019), The Zoya Factor (2019), War (2019) and Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (2020). He also choreographed for the punjabi movie Qismat 2 (2021).
He was the stage director of the reality show India’s Got Talent (2015-2016) in its 6th and 7th season.
He shared the jury panel with Madhuri Dixit and Shashank Khaitan in the first season of dance reality show ‘Dance Deewane’ in 2018 and went on to judge the Season 2 and Season 3 of ‘Dance Deewane’. It was his stint as a judge on ‘Dance Deewane’ that made him a household name.
Femina Miss India 2019 was choreographed by Tushar Kalia.
He got his first award for choreography which he shared with Bosco Martis and Caesar Gonsalves at Star Screen Awards in 2019 for ‘Ghungroo’ song in the movie War (2019). They also won the Best Choreography at the IIFA Awards, 2020.
On 15th May 2022, Tushar announced his engagement with his longtime girlfriend Triveni Barman on Instagram by sharing some pictures from the event in which Tushar and Triveni were seen performing some rituals. The caption read, “To new beginnings. Send us your love and blessings”. Triveni Barman is a successful model and was crowned Miss Assam in 2017. She also participated in Femina Miss India pageant where she was among Top 15 contestants.
In an interview in June 2022, Kalia revealed that he is working on the script of a dance-based film which he plans to direct next year but it will not be a typical dance movie that pits two groups against each other.
